DUKE BURGESS SR.
The widow and a daughter, Mrs.James J. Grant, left San Francisco Thursday with the body of Duke Burgess Sr., 61, member of a pioneer Tarrant County family and formerly in the construction, oil and cattle business here, who was killed Wednesday in a shipyard accident at San Francisco. Duke Burgess Jr., 120 Williamsburg Lane, was informed Thursday that the accident occurred when a large truck backed against the elder Mr. Burgess while he was supervising work on shipyard machinery. The elder Mr. Burgess went to California last July to work in the shipyard. He was born at Lexington, Ky., and came to Tarrant County with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John William Burgess, who operated a ranch here in the early days. John William Burgess was one of the founders of the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show. Another son of Mr. Duke Burgess Sr. is Lt. Beaumont Burgess, member of the famed 19th Bombardment Group, who was reported missing at Bataan a year ago. Also surviving are the widow; brother, John I. Burgess, and three sisters, Mrs. Van Zandt Jarvis, Mrs. Lillie B. Hovenkamp and Mrs.Mary Perry, all of Fort Worth. |
