| HOTEL PICKWICK Fort Worth, Texas May 9th, 1884 Mrs. J.W. Burgess Dear Sue, I am going out in the country today to look after a pasture to hold the cattle in that I have bought for the Ranch until I can ship them. I think I will probably go to the land I have bought which is in the country. The land I have bought is in full view of Fort Worth and is known as the Blue moundtract of land. There are 1277 acres in the tract and I am to pay $8.00 per acre for it. It is the most beautiful & fertile tract of land I think I ever saw. I intend raising blooded stock in it which is very much needed in this country. I am perfectly delighted with Texas as a home & have my full consent to live here the remainder of my days. I have never been able to solve the problem of what to do with our boys until now. I want them to have homes here and engage in the stock business provided they like it. The climate is just delightful. The people clever(?). The land rich. Country(?) healthy with the exception of chills in certain localities. And any one that can live in Ky. can certainly do well here. I am very busy buying cattle and really wish I was through so that I could give my own business my attention. I will return home as soon as I can possibly do so and make my arrangements to come here during the fall and stock my land with new(?) cattle. Write soon. Love to all. Yours devotedly J.W. Burgess |
